Windsor Catholic High School Gets Province Approval

windsor catholic high school approved by Province

The province has approved the Windsor Catholic school board to construct a new building for one of its high schools. The Windsor-Essex County District School Board told CBC News that the announcement from the provincial government was a major milestone for Catholic Central High School. They have been waiting years for this announcement.

An article in Yahoo! News stated that the current building which is located at 441 Tecumseh Road East does not have air conditioning and many rooms are way too small. Some students have even had to go to a different location for some of their classes.

The building will cost $27 million and was provided by the Ministry of Education a few years ago. The Ontario government pitched in $7 million to buy the land.

Last year the Catholic board said it hired an architect to develop a design for the new school that is expected to have space for more than 900 students. The current location only holds 700 students.

The school community is very diverse and includes many newcomer families.

The board expects to receive tender pricing from a list of contractors and award a contract in early March.

Construction on the new building at 2465 McDougall Street is expected to begin later this year and hopefully open in the fall of 2022.

The Windsor Star reported that the new school will include 938 student spaces. Once the board awards a contract, they will unveil the design plans to the community. The Catholic school board last year retained +VG Architects for the project, which must meet ministry guidelines.

"This announcement is great news for students, educators and hard-working families in Windsor. Our government is committed to supporting young people as they seek to achieve lifelong success, and by providing safe, accessible, state-of-the art learning environments we are helping to accomplish just that."

Education Minister | Stephen Lecce

The Ontario government announced in the 2020 budget it would invest $13 billion over 10 years, including $550 million in 2020-2021, for new schools, additions and major renovations. The province said it is also giving school boards $1.4 billion in funding to renew and maintain existing schools.
