The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is planning to build a new headquarters in Northwestern Toronto on Shoreham Drive according to Urban Toronto.
Per the Ontario Construction Report, the authority submitted an application for a four storey building for approval filed with the city earlier this month. The building will feature a low-carbon wood and concrete hybrid design by Toronto's ZAS Architects and Dublin based Bucholz McEvoy Architects.
All six of TRCA's partaking municipalities had approved the project in 2017 and allocated $60 Million in new and existing funding for this project. The approval process is expected to continue into early 2019.
According to Urban Toronto, the new headquarters will be located just west of York University's main campus in northwestern Toronto and beside the Aviva Centre, Tennis Canada's premier facility for professional tournaments. The facility will blend with the natural setting along the Black Creek. The architectural plans call for a cedar timber cladding and glazing. Other materials to be used are timber shading and timber louvered opening lights. There will also be a pair of solar chimneys rising 6.4 metres above the building's roofline which will passively draw hot air out of the building and will be a major component towards the building's goal of meeting both a minimum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification and WELL Building certification.
Per TRCA, this new building is being designed to:
- Reduce operational costs
- Provide a healthy workplace for employees and visitors alike
- Set a high water mark for office building development
- Positively influence others engaged in designing and building communities in their jurisdiction and beyond.
TRCA is bound to its committment to implementing its practices in green building and sustainable design.
Their Milestone Schedule is as follows:
- Architectural Design Phase: October 2017 - July 2018
- Site Plan Approval: April 2018 - February 2019
- Tender Construction: February 2019 - May 2019
- Construction: June 2019 - March 2021
- Occupancy: March 2021 - June 2021
