As part of the City's 2022 Concrete Street Improvements Project, a number of road projects are planned starting in the month of May that will include pavement repair and reconstruction including water main replacements.

Champaign Illinois reports that the following street improvements will include:

Posted on May 12, 2022

 - The pavement on Western Avenue from Kirby Avenue to Chevy Chase Drive will be reconstructed.

 - Illinois American Water Company will be replacing water main along this portion of Western Avenue.

A and R services will be the contractor for both the City of Champaign's work and Illinois American Water Company's work, under separate contracts.

Work will begin on Monday, May 16, weather permitting. At that time, the southbound lane of Western Avenue will be closed between Kirby Avenue and Chevy Chase Drive. This section of Western Avenue will temporarily become one lane, one-way northbound traffic only. This work is scheduled to be completed by November 13, 2022.

 - The pavement on Fourth Street from Armory Avenue to Daniel Street will be reconstructed.

 - Illinois American Water Company will be replacing water main below the pavement on this portion of Fourth Street.

A and R Services will be the contractor for both the City of Champaign work and Illinois American Water Company's work, under separate contracts.

Work on this project has been delayed and will not begin on Monday, May 16. The City will issue another press release for this project once work dates have been determined.

  - Storm sewer and pavement repairs are planned.

  - SNC Construction will be narrowing the northbound lane of Country Fair Drive immediately north of Church Street. All travel at the intersection will remain open and unaffected by this work.

Work started on May 12 at 7 a.m. and is planned to be completed and reopened to traffic on Monday, May 16, 2022. Minor traffic delays may occur at work zones. The work is weather dependent and may be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

According to The News-Gazette, a long-awaited reconstruction project for Florida Avenue in Urbana stands to be expanded, with much of the new higher cost potentially covered by a federal grant.

Originally planned for the section of Florida Avenue between Vine Street and Lincoln Avenue, the new version would extend from Vine to the city line near Illinois Field.

It would include:

  - New shared-use path on the south side of Florida for bicyclists and pedestrians from Lincoln to Race

 - New signalized intersections at Race and Vince Streets

 - Improved signalized intersections at Lincoln Avenue and Orchard Street

The reconstruction of Florida Avenue has been in the city's capital improvement plan since 2017, in part because of the condition of the pavement, the high-priority need for the shared-use path and level of daily traffic.

The city is hoping to cover the additional cost with a grant from the federal government's Rebuilding America's Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity program announced earlier this year. The program is making $1.5 billion in funding available to help communities pay for projects with significant local or regional impact.

The city is teaming up with the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District and Champaign County Regional Planning Commission to apply.
