OPG to Build New Campus for 2000 Workers

OPG new campus

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is establishing a new corporate headquarters on a campus in Clarington which is located within Durham Region. They will be drawing about 2,000 workers from 15 locations across southern Ontario.

OPG produces about half of Ontario's power and will be starting construction on the new campus in either 2020 or 2021. The facility will be built on a plot of land already owned by OPG and will be adjacent to the Darlington Energy Complex per On-Site Magazine.

"This new campus will also help OPG reduce its real estate footprint and reduce the use of commercial leased space thus reducing costs that will benefit the Ontario ratepayers." "This is an exciting opportunity for OPG to create a high-tech energy hub that promotes innovation and collaboration across the organization and with our partners and suppliers."

President and CEO of OPG | Ken Hartwick

This new campus will bring together nuclear staff, renewable generation specialists and corporate staff in one complex. They also plan to shut down and relocate smaller offices across the Greater Toronto Area and Niagara Region which will end up saving 50 per cent on annual lease costs for OPG.

According to Durham Radio News, OPG holds more than one million square feet of leased commercial space. This totals about $26 million every year just for rent. By moving to a single, corporate campus, OPG will reduce its annual building lease cost by approximately 50 per cent.

Per Durham Region, OPG's Darlington Nuclear Generating Station has been a major employer in Clarington since 1990. The design work on the new OPG headquarters has not been done yet. Construction of the new campus is expected to be completed in 2024 and staff will begin moving in at that time.

The new OPG headquarters will be part of an innovation campus that includes the existing Darlington Energy Complex and a cutting edge OPG training centre which includes a full scale nuclear reactor mock-up. The new campus will provide opportunities to make space for partnerships with other energy industry experts and local post-secondary schools like Durham College, Ontario Tech University and Trent University.
