Ontario to Break Ground on Long Term Care Home in Tillsonburg

Construction is well underway on the 160-bed long-term care (LTC) home, peopleCare Tillsonburg, located in Tillsonburg, Ontario. This vital project is part of the Ontario government’s broader initiative to address the pressing demand for LTC facilities by building 58,000 new and upgraded beds across the province. Funded in part through the Construction Funding Subsidy top-up, the facility is designed with a modern approach to meet the needs of residents and provide state-of-the-art amenities.

Key Features of the New Facility

The peopleCare Tillsonburg home will feature a three-storey structure spanning 2,950 square metres. With a focus on creating smaller, community-like environments, the facility will include five ‘resident home areas’ designed to accommodate up to 32 residents each. These intimate spaces will feature dining and activity areas, lounges, and cozy living rooms. Other planned amenities include:

  • A welcoming bistro

  • A serene chapel

  • Activity and dining rooms

  • Secured balconies

  • A central courtyard and outdoor spaces

  • Therapy and hair salon rooms

  • A family stay-over suite

The facility is expected to open its doors to residents in late 2026.

Addressing Ontario’s Long-Term Care Needs

The demand for LTC beds in Ontario far exceeds current availability. Over 48,000 people are on the waitlist for LTC across the province, with Oxford County alone facing nearly 1,800 individuals waiting for less than half that number of licensed beds. This facility will significantly ease the strain on local LTC homes and free up hospital beds for acute care patients.

"Congratulations to the team on the new construction at peopleCare Tillsonburg. Our government is fixing long-term care, and a key part of that plan is building capacity where Ontarians need it. Today marks a significant milestone for Tillsonburg. When construction is complete, 160 residents will have a safe and modern place to call home."

PeopleCare Communities reports that the project aligns with the Ontario government’s four-pillar strategy for improving long-term care:

  1. Staffing and Care: Boosting resources to provide high-quality care.

  2. Quality and Enforcement: Strengthening oversight and maintaining high standards.

  3. Modern Homes: Constructing safe, comfortable, and modern facilities.

  4. Convenient Services: Enhancing access to necessary health services.

Collaboration with the Community

The 2021 Community Strategic Plan for Tillsonburg highlighted increasing LTC capacity as a priority. With strong support from Town Staff and Council, peopleCare has worked to expedite the construction timeline. In the future, peopleCare aims to collaborate with the community to create an integrated senior living environment that fosters healthy aging and independence.

Employment Opportunities

Once completed in 2026, the peopleCare Tillsonburg home will become a significant employer in the region, creating over 250 jobs. Positions will range from caregiving roles to administrative and facility management positions, boosting the local economy and providing meaningful employment opportunities.

Thoughtful Design for Resident Well-Being

peopleCare Tillsonburg’s design prioritizes the well-being of residents, staff, and visitors. Key features include:

  • Central Courtyard: A lively outdoor space for relaxation and community activities.

  • Children’s Play Area: Encouraging intergenerational connections and visits.

  • Family Stayover Suite: Accommodating families visiting loved ones.

  • Specialized Dementia Care: Tailored spaces and programming for residents with memory challenges.

Each of the 32-bed areas includes kitchenette spaces where caregivers and residents can prepare meals together, fostering a sense of home and community. Daily activities, vibrant central meeting areas, and local artwork will further enhance the living experience, promoting connection and comfort.

Conclusion

The peopleCare Tillsonburg project represents a significant step forward in addressing Ontario’s long-term care needs. With its modern design, extensive amenities, and commitment to community integration, the facility promises to provide high-quality care and a nurturing environment for seniors. Additionally, the project will bring substantial economic and social benefits to Tillsonburg, setting a new benchmark for long-term care homes in the province.
