Plans were submitted to the City of Toronto in February 2019 to build a 13 storey office building. Manga Hotels acquired the site at 689 King Street in May. The new amended proposal is now calling for a new hotel development consisting of a pair of 13 and 18 storey buildings designed by Sweeny & Co. Architects. (Rendering above submitted to the City of Toronto).
An article in Toronto Storeys states that Manga Hotels is a Canada-based, privately held company with a focus on high-quality hotels affiliated with prestigious brands such as Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and InterContinental Hotel Group.
The site is located on the south side of King Street West, near the intersection of King Street West and Bathurst Street. The property is now vacant and previously had a single-storey building housing retail and a car wash.
The proposal will include the following:
- 13,521 square metres of new hotel space
- Lobby bar/restaurant space and amenities
- Site density of 8.95 times the area of the lot
- Connected by a two-storey podium
- Courtyard terrace
- 319 total hotel suites (One tower will contain 192 suites and the other 126 suites)
The 18 storey tower will stand 60.91 metres and the 13 storey tower will stand at 43.25 metres.
The hotel guests will have a vehicle access to loading and there will be a two-level, 31 space underground garage from King Street West by an internalized driveway. There will also be eight long-term and four short-term bicycle parking spaces.
According to BlogTo, Manga Hotel also has another two-tower proposal slated for Richmond and Camden Streets that will feature 375 guest rooms distributed across a pair of 15 and 17 storey buildings.
So far, Manga has 18 properties including a number of hotels near the Toronto Airport, in Canada's East Coast, and New York.
Urban Toronto states that the renderings show a facade of protruding faceted window panels with no windows provided on the east or west elevations. Brick veneer clad wall sections mirror the window sections on those elevations.
Other projects in recent years that were also designed by Sweeny & Co. for Manga Hotels included a two-building hotel at 184 Spadina Avenue and 471 Richmond Street West which is also working their way through the planning process. The tallest building in the Mississauga based hospitality management firm's portfolio is Hyatt Place/The 203 Residences on Jarvis which is currently under construction.
