New Major Transit Hub will Improve Toronto Area Commuting

The Kipling GO transit station is on its way to becoming a major transit hub for the Toronto area transit networks. The new Kipling Station hub will make transportation easier for residents of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) with train and bus connections to and from suburban communities.

The new transit hub at the Kipling station, designed by Strasman Architects, Inc, will integrate the bus, train, subway, and road systems with a pedestrian bridge and bicycle paths. More parking spots will be added. This station is also the western terminus of the 2 Bloor-Danforth subway line from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) that connects to the local MiWay, the Mississauga Transit.

The GTHA covers 8,262 square kilometers or 3,196 square miles and includes the municipalities of Halton, Peel, York, and Durham in addition to Mississauga, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, and other communities. The population of this area is more than 7,000,000.

The Government of Ontario Transit, known as the GO transit system, uses green and white trains and buses to connect the different communities extending from Toronto's Union Station. The GO trains and buses are adding wireless WiFi for busy commuters. Ontario's Metrolinx operates the transit system.

Ontario is investing another $21.3 billion over the next seven years to transform the GO transit system into a larger rapid transit with GO Regional Express Rail service. This includes increasing the number of GO RER trains to 6,000 annual trips by 2025.

The province is also cutting the cost of commuting by integrating fares among the transit systems. GO Transit fares of $3.00 for trips of less than 10 kilometers anywhere in the network will be added in 2019. Discounts for certain travel routes within the networks will also be offered.

The multi-million dollar project that broke ground in early April will be completed in the spring of 2020.

A request for preliminary design services was first posted in DataBid in February 0f 2015. Forty Five companies submitted RFP's and ultimately was awarded to CH2M Hill Canada, Ltd. located in Toronto.
