New Long Term Care Facility has groundbreaking in Kingston

New long term care facility has groundbreaking in Kingston

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Extendicare long-term care (LTC) facility in Kingston and signalled the start of a $51 million project which is scheduled for completion in February of 2023.

According to the Kingstonist, Extendicare President and CEO, Dr. Michael Guerriere was joined by Mayor Bryan Paterson for the official groundbreaking of the project.

The new Extendicare Kingston will replace Extendicare's LTC home in the city and will include the following:

 - Additional 42 beds

 - Space for 192 residents with each having their own bedroom

 - Three storey building will be 107,922 square feet with 562 square feet per resident

 - Neighborhoods of self-contained, 32 resident home areas with dedicated dining rooms, more activity space, and lounging areas

 - A country kitchen, physiotherapy room, and resident access to a secure outdoor space

 - Parking for visitors

 - Restorative care

 - Palliative care

 - Additional space for families supporting residents through end-of-life care

New design specifications will work to combat COVID-19 outbreak issues like those experienced in many LTC facilities across Ontario over the past two years. The new facility in Kingston is designed to improve infection prevention and to control and limit the spread of virus like COVID-19 by including:

 - Single resident rooms

 - Updated HVAC systems

 - Larger common areas to allow for physical distancing

 - Will meet or exceed Ministry of Long Term Care guidelines for new long-term care homes

The Government of Ontario's new long-term care sector plan is providing the funding for the building. This includes a $4.9 billion investment over four years to support hiring more than 27,000 staff, including registered nurses, personal support workers and support staff according to a release from the provincial government.

"Modern homes built to today's standards are needed for our residents' care and comfort. We are grateful for this government's historic support of long-term care, enabling redevelopment of homes across the province. We also want to extend our thanks to the City of Kingston for its steadfast support for this project throughout the planning process. We are proud to do our part to build a better future for seniors in this community."

Extendicare President and CEO | Dr. Michael Guerriere

An article in The Whig Standard reports that the current Extendicare location at 309 Queen Mary Road was built in 1973 and houses 150 residents. The new $51 million building will replace it, creating 42 new spaces for residents. It will be located at 1306 Demers Avenue, behind the RioCan Centre.

This is the second of nine new Extendicare locations in Ontario. The company is investing $500 million to create 1,880 new long-term care beds. Dr. Guerriere said there had been plans to update the Kingston location prior to the pandemic, but COVID put everything on pause.

The pandemic has demonstrated the need for newer homes with individual rooms and infection control is much easier in the newer facilities.
