Meadowview Behavioral Hospital Breaks Ground in Peoria

Meadowview Behavioral Hospital Breaks Ground in Peoria (1)

Construction is underway on Meadowview Behavioral Hospital, a 100-bed medical facility taking shape on Peoria's north side. The project is a joint venture between OSF HealthCare and US HealthVest, a leading developer of behavioral hospitals. Strategically located at 9014 N. Wood Sage Road near Illinois Route 91, this new facility will bring vital mental health and substance abuse treatment services to Central Illinois.

A Purpose-Driven Project

Meadowview Behavioral Hospital is designed to address a long-standing gap in regional mental health services. Behavioral health needs, including treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use disorders, have consistently ranked among the top five concerns in Community Needs Health Assessments for over a decade. Recognizing this demand, OSF HealthCare and US HealthVest launched the project to provide comprehensive care for individuals struggling with a wide spectrum of behavioral health conditions.

“This is a vital addition to our region that reflects our shared commitment to meeting people where they are with compassionate, high-quality care. Mental and behavioral health are critical components of a person’s well-being, and this new hospital will help us address one of the most urgent health needs in our community.”

President, OSF HealthCare | Michelle Conger

The 64,000-square-foot facility, estimated at $35 million, is being built from the ground up. This allows for optimized layouts that segregate patients based on clinical need, enhancing care delivery and safety. Specialized units will include:

  • A geriatric unit for elderly patients

  • A youth unit for adolescents

  • An ICU-level unit for acutely troubled patients in crisis

  • Stabilized treatment units for those progressing through therapy

WCBU News reports that this tiered system enables personalized care and supports the hospital’s commitment to evidence-based treatment protocols.

Construction and Design Details

Construction of Meadowview Behavioral Hospital began in spring 2024, with completion expected in the first half of 2026. The site preparation has already been completed, and vertical construction is now in progress.

The 64,000-square-foot building will feature:

  • Steel frame structural system to support the multi-unit layout and patient room configurations

  • Durable interior finishes suited for high-traffic medical environments

  • Specialized HVAC systems with advanced air filtration for infection control and patient comfort

  • Soundproofing and security features to ensure privacy and safety

  • Flexible room configurations that allow for group therapy, medical consultations, and crisis stabilization

Subcontractors across multiple trades are expected to be involved throughout the project lifecycle, including:

  • Earthworks and grading teams for site preparation

  • Structural steel and framing crews

  • MEP contractors for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems

  • HVAC specialists

  • Roofing and waterproofing professionals

  • Drywall, flooring, and finishing trades

The hospital’s design will also accommodate outpatient services, providing accessible care for individuals not requiring full inpatient admission.

Economic and Employment Impact

Beyond patient care, Meadowview Behavioral Hospital will bring numerous jobs to the Peoria area. The construction phase alone will support dozens of local trades and contractors. Once operational, the hospital will create new clinical roles across nursing, therapy, administration, and support services.

Employees will help deliver critical services to patients coping with a range of behavioral health challenges, from addiction recovery to managing trauma. The hospital’s multi-unit model is designed to allow each care team to focus on a specific patient population, fostering specialization and better outcomes.

Conclusion

With construction officially underway, Meadowview Behavioral Hospital is set to become a cornerstone in Peoria's healthcare landscape. The 100-bed facility will expand access to mental health and addiction treatment while also creating construction and healthcare jobs. Once completed in 2026, the hospital will offer hope and healing to thousands of patients in need—delivered in a modern, safe, and purpose-built environment.
