Massive Expansion of O'Hare International Airport

Written by Judy Lamelza | Sep 7, 2024 2:52:22 PM

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is embarking on a significant expansion, marking a new era for one of the world's busiest airports. An updated timeline has been revealed for the massive expansion of the airport as the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) begins funding efforts. Earlier this year, the city reached a resolution with airlines on a new phasing plan for construction as costs continue to balloon with inflation. This blog will delve into the construction and design details of this ambitious project, highlighting aspects most relevant to workers in the construction field.

Project Overview

1. Concourse Construction

  • Initially the airport expected to build two remote/satellite concourses, a connecting tunnel, and the central Global Terminal in that order. However, cost discussions led to a change in priorities, with Satellite Concourse 1 designed by SOM, Ross Barney Architects, Arup, and JGMA going up first. This will be followed by the Studio Gang designed Global Terminal replacing Terminal 2.
  • Design Features: Renderings released by the Chicago Department of Aviation show modern designs with spacious interiors and ample natural light. The concourse aims to provide a comfortable and efficient environment for travelers.

2. Redevelopment of Terminal 2

  • O'Hare Global Terminal: Terminal 2 will be transformed into the new O'Hare Global Terminal, serving both domestic and international flights.
  • Architectural Design: The design incorporates state-of-the-art facilities and technology to streamline passenger processing and enhance security measures.

“Chicago’s airports play a critical role in the country’s aviation system and our local economy, impacting more than 700,000 jobs across the region and contributing more than $70 billion in economic activity. Investments in our airports are truly investments in our communities, generating new career opportunities for the people and families of Chicago and creating generational wealth among local entrepreneurs. Moving on to the next phase of O’Hare expansion has required a full force of government approach, led by my administration, from our federal leaders and legislators to the team at the Chicago Department of Aviation, and I look forward to continuing this work with our airline partners as we build the O’Hare of tomorrow together.”

Construction Details

1. Modern Architectural Elements

  • Use of Glass and Natural Light: The new concourse will feature large glass panels to maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating an open atmosphere.
  • Spacious Interiors: High ceilings and open spaces are designed to accommodate increased passenger flow and reduce congestion.

2. Sustainability and Green Initiatives

  • Energy Efficiency: The designs focus on energy-efficient systems, including advanced HVAC and lighting solutions.
  • Sustainable Materials: Construction will utilize environmentally friendly materials to minimize the environmental impact.

3. Enhanced Passenger Amenities

  • Retail and Dining Options: Expanded areas for shops and restaurants will provide travelers with more choices and improve the overall airport experience.
  • Comfortable Seating and Charging Stations: Upgraded seating areas with charging facilities for electronic devices are included in the plans.

Impact on the Construction Field

1. Employment Opportunities

  • Job Creation: The expansion is expected to create numerous jobs in various construction trades, including carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and HVAC installation.
  • Skill Development: Workers will have the opportunity to engage with modern construction techniques and sustainable building practices.

2. Technological Integration

  • Advanced Systems Installation: The project involves installing cutting-edge technology for security, passenger processing, and facility management.
  • Training and Expertise: Construction workers will gain experience with advanced systems, enhancing their skills and expertise in the field.

3. Collaboration and Coordination

  • Large-Scale Project Management: The expansion requires coordination among multiple contractors and subcontractors, offering insights into complex project management.
  • Safety Protocols: Emphasis on safety will be paramount, providing workers with experience in adhering to strict safety standards on a large construction site.

Timeline and Phasing

1. Project Initiation

  • Approval and Planning: The Chicago City Council approved the next phase of the O'Hare expansion in May 2024.
  • Renderings Released: The Chicago Department of Aviation unveiled renderings of the new concourses, providing a visual guide for the construction process.

Chicago Yimby reports that new city bond documents show that work on Satellite Concourse 1 will be completed in 2028, with the Global Terminal on track for its formerly announced 2032 date. From there things will accelerate with the construction of the aforementioned connection tunnel and people mover within it as well as Satellite Concourse 2 being completed in 2034.

2. Construction Schedule

  • Commencement: While specific start dates were not mentioned, the approval indicates that construction is anticipated to begin in the near future.
  • Phased Development: The project will be carried out in phases to ensure continuous airport operations and minimize disruptions.

The expansion of O'Hare International Airport represents a significant investment in Chicago's infrastructure and future. For construction workers, this project offers a unique opportunity to be part of a transformative development that emphasizes modern design, sustainability, and enhanced passenger experience. The skills and experience gained from working on such a high-profile project will be invaluable, contributing to professional growth and expertise in the construction industry.
