The construction industry in Ontario is buzzing with the news of two groundbreaking projects underway in Pembroke and Peterborough - the redevelopment of Marianhill Nursing Home and Extendicare Peterborough respectively. These projects are part of a significant commitment by the Ontario government, which has pledged $6.4 billion towards the construction of over 30,000 new beds and the upgrade of 28,000 long-term care beds across the province by 2028.
This initiative, championed by Paul Calandra, Minister of Long-Term Care, represents a much-needed revitalization of the long-term care sector. The minister congratulated both establishments, stating that these projects marked critical milestones in the government's mission to provide modern, safe, and comfortable homes for the province's seniors.
The phased redevelopment of Marianhill in Pembroke is set to be completed by summer 2026, with the first new residents expected to move in by winter 2025. This project will provide 160 modern long-term care beds, with a special focus on enhanced services for residents who require dementia care, behavioural supports, and palliative care.
Meanwhile, the Extendicare Peterborough project involves the construction of a new 256-bed facility, expected to be ready by fall 2025. Both homes will boast design improvements such as larger common areas for residents and air conditioning in all resident rooms. Their design focuses on 'resident home areas' to create intimate and familiar living spaces for up to 32 residents, complete with dining and activity areas, lounges, and bedrooms.
The ministry's Not-For-Profit Loan Guarantee Program is playing a crucial role in the redevelopment of Marianhill. This program is a significant tool for the not-for-profit long-term care sector, which has historically faced barriers in securing capital development loans. By unlocking lending and reducing borrowing costs, the program ensures Ontario's seniors have a range of choices for their long-term care needs.
Ontario Newsroom states that in addition to these major projects, the government is supporting 10 more in Renfrew and Peterborough Counties, promising a total of 1,484 beds built to modern design standards.
This renewed commitment to long-term care is designed to ensure Ontario's seniors receive the quality of care and quality of life they deserve, both now and in the future. It is based on four pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe, and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need.
The redeveloped homes are set to bring 416 much-needed long-term care beds to the province. For instance, Extendicare Peterborough, which received approval in late 2020, will replace the existing facility on Alexandria Court. This project will be built on 24 acres of land and feature 256 beds, including 84 new beds and 172 upgraded beds by fall 2025.
These projects represent not only a substantial investment in the province's infrastructure but also a testament to the government's commitment to the care and quality of life of Ontario's senior population. The commercial construction industry is proud to play a part in this vital initiative, and we look forward to seeing the positive impacts these new homes will have on the communities they serve.
