Highway Improvements Underway for Local Roads in Ontario

Highway Improvements Underway in Ontario

The annual construction season is underway on provincial highways in Ontario. The provincial government will spend an estimated $3 billion to repair and expand highways and bridges across Ontario. This includes approximately $614 million on projects in Northern Ontario.

The province expects that highway projects will create about 15,700 direct and indirect jobs across Ontario this summer.

New construction projects either planned or underway in the Timmins area include:

 - A stretch on Highway 101 at Shillington, rehab and culvert replacement at Shillington Creek, Anthony Creek and an unnamed creek

 - Highway 101 west of Matheson easterly to Highway 572, bridge rehabilitation and resurfacing

 - Highway 655, south of Driftwood at Lennox Creek, culvert replacement

 - Highway 11 at the Driftwood River east of Smooth Rock Falls, bridge replacement

According to Timmins Today, new construction projects on some commonly used highways this summer include the following:

 - Highway 144 from Highway 17 northerly to Chelmsford, resurfacing

 - Highway 144 at Windy Creek, north of Onaping Falls and at Pumphouse Creek, west of Cartier, culvert removal and replacement

 - Highway 144 north of Highway 560 to Highway 661 at Gogama, resurfacing

 - Highway 11 at the bypass in North Bay, bridge rehabilitation and resurfacing

 - Highway 11 at the Highway 518 interchange northerly from Emsdale to Burk's Falls, resurfacing and hazard rock removal

 - Highway 560, west of the junction of Highway 65, west of Elk Lake, culvert replacement

Driving delays are expected when traveling through construction zones and drivers are reminded to slow down to the speed limits in posted construction zones.

Ontario.ca reports that from April 2022 to March 2023, the Ontario government is committing approximately $3.0 billion to repair and expand provincial highways and bridges. This includes construction funding of almost $1.7 billion in Southern Ontario and almost $624 million in Northern Ontario. These smart investments will create or sustain approximately 15,700 direct and indirect jobs and improve quality of life for workers, families and small businesses across Ontario.
