Crosswind Runway Project at Morris Municipal Airport

Crosswind Runway Project at Morris Municipal Airport

Governor JB Pritzker, along with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and local leaders, has kicked off construction of a long-awaited crosswind runway at Morris Municipal Airport. This major infrastructure upgrade, made possible through the historic Rebuild Illinois capital program, will significantly improve safety, capacity, and economic opportunity for Grundy County and beyond.

A Major Investment in Illinois Aviation

The project represents a capital investment of nearly $12 million from Rebuild Illinois, matched by $11.5 million in local contributions. Together, the total investment of $105 million marks the largest statewide capital investment program for airports in Illinois history.

“Rebuild Illinois isn't just about filling potholes, repairing train crossings, and building runways—we set out to lay the foundation for economic prosperity, better jobs, and a more affordable future for the people of Illinois. We’re proud to support this critical project in Morris as part of our larger vision to make Illinois’ aviation infrastructure the best in the nation.”

The project scope includes:

  • A 3,500-foot crosswind runway to complement the airport’s existing single runway.

  • New taxiways and lighting systems to improve navigation and safety.

  • Infrastructure designed to handle up to 40,000 additional landings annually.

For years, small planes have been unable to land or take off in Morris during high crosswinds. With this new runway, the airport will provide reliable access in all weather conditions, strengthening its role as a critical regional asset.

Economic and Workforce Benefits

Shaw Local reports that the Morris Municipal Airport already supports more than 42,000 takeoffs and landings each year, contributing to 130 jobs and generating an estimated $15.2 million in local economic impact. The addition of the new runway is expected to:

  • Increase reliability for local businesses that depend on air travel.

  • Attract new companies and developers who value proximity to a modern, well-equipped municipal airport.

  • Create construction jobs and long-term operational employment opportunities.

Supported by Rebuild Illinois

The runway is part of Governor Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois program, a $45 billion statewide initiative passed in 2019. Unlike past capital programs, Rebuild Illinois invests in all modes of transportation, including:

  • Airports

  • Roads and bridges

  • Passenger and freight rail

  • Waterways

  • Bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure

The aviation component of Rebuild Illinois has already advanced 96 public airport projects across Illinois, modernizing facilities and preparing the state’s aviation system—which includes over 850 individual landing facilities—for long-term growth.

Design and Construction Details

The City of Morris, as owner and operator of the airport, is contributing approximately $2.9 million toward the project and overseeing construction. The design features include:

  • Runway length: 3,500 feet

  • Construction type: Paved surface suitable for general aviation aircraft

  • Sound and lighting systems: Enhanced to meet modern FAA standards

The project will ensure small aircraft can land safely regardless of weather conditions. By expanding operational flexibility, the runway will reduce downtime, improve scheduling, and help accommodate higher traffic volumes.

Long-Term Impact for Grundy County

Once complete, the new crosswind runway will help Morris Municipal Airport serve as a reliable regional hub for aviation in Illinois. The upgrades will not only strengthen Grundy County’s economy but also ensure Illinois remains one of the top aviation states in the U.S. — supporting nearly $100 billion in annual economic activity and over 492,000 jobs.
