The Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative recently allocated $6.4 million towards the construction of three promising housing projects in Huron County. These projects are aimed at providing more affordable housing options and combating local homelessness.
Here's an insight into these developments:
Bennett Street, Goderich: Expanding Options - $2 million
- Bennett Street in Goderich will soon be home to two new triplexes. Nearing completion, these six units (comprising two 2-bedroom and four 1-bedroom apartments) will offer varied living arrangements suitable for singles, couples, and families. Funding for this project has been sourced from the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative, Social Services Relief Fund, and the County of Huron.
Sanders Street, Exeter: Building Opportunities - $7.5 million
- On Sanders Street in Exeter, a 20-unit apartment building is being planned. With construction expected to commence in Summer 2023, these units will provide affordable housing for singles and couples. This project will be constructed on an existing residential lot, with financial backing from the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative and additional fundraising efforts.
Gibbons Street, Goderich: A Grand Vision - $20.4 million
- A 39-unit apartment building is in the early stages of planning on Gibbons Street in Goderich. Expected to begin in 2024, this project is being constructed on land acquired by the County of Huron from the City of Goderich for just $1, with continued fundraising to support the project. The apartment building will contain a mix of one and two-bedroom units offering supportive, rent-geared-to-income, and affordable housing units for a mix of household types.
"The County of Huron is tremendously grateful for this financial contribution made by the province. The continued commitment of the province to support housing developments like this one in Exeter, is impactful. We greatly appreciate this partnership and look forward to continued collaborations in the future."
