Construction is expected to begin on a $65.5 Million community centre at Morrow Park within the next two weeks. The complex will include:
- An aquatic centre with an eight-lane pool and warm-up therapy pool
- 5,000 square foot Peterborough Public Library
- Twin pad arena with 500 seats on each pad
- Elevated running/walking track
- Landscaping and parking
- Public washrooms and storage
- 12 team change rooms
- Concession stand
- Two multipurpose rooms
Site preparation is said to take six to eight weeks and construction is set to be completed by the fall of 2024.
PTBO Canada states that in a July meeting, Peterborough City Council approved Morrow Park at Lansdowne Street and Park Street as the location for the complex.
A pre-planned reconstruction of a section of Lansdowne Street West running next to Morrow Park is being timed to align with the construction of this new community centre.
City of Peterborough reports that activity on the site this fall by Ball Construction, the project general contractor, is expected to include:
- Staging of equipment and materials
- Erecting of fencing around the work area
- Tree protection
- Site preparation work
- In-ground construction for the community centre
"Our new community centre is a much needed project anticipated by many community members with multiple uses included for all ages. A major silver lining is the addition of a new library branch to replace the outdated DelFosse building. All conveniently located as a hub for local citizens and sports tourism."
Chair of Arenas, Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee | Councillor Lesley Parnell
City Council approved the location for the new community centre back in July of 2021. The project has been through several stages of studies, community engagement, and approvals over many years.
