Newmarket's new $26 million state-of-the-art police station has just begun construction. There was a groundbreaking on Friday of the #1 District facility at 429 Harry Walker Parkway South that is scheduled to be completed by late 2021. Police and civic dignitaries attended the official ground breaking.
An article in the Newmarket Today states that the 49,500 square foot station will not only serve Newmarket, but also Aurora, East Gwillimbury, King Township and a small portion of the north border of Vaughan. That is a total population of about 200,000 citizens.
More than 200 sworn and civilian police service members will be working out of that facility.
The new station will feature the following:
- Public access and areas for community use
- Administration and office areas
- Vehicle sally ports
- Booking areas
- Holding cells
- Interview rooms
- Evidence lockers
- Secure storage areas
- Fitness rooms
- Lockers
- lunchroom
The building will be designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standards.
York Regional Police will retain the current #1 District station at 240 Prospect St. in downtown Newmarket.
The three storey building on the west side of Prospect Street at Water was built as additional office space by Office Specialty in 1949. Business was booming at the time as it was right after the Second World War.
Negotiations began for the sale of the office building on Prospect in 1971 when Office Specialty was closing. It was bought by the Region of York for $225,700 for the York Regional Police Headquarters.
