Construction Begins on New Emergency Dept. in Carleton Place

Written by Judy Lamelza | Oct 30, 2022 3:30:02 PM

Construction will begin immediately on the new emergency department at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH). The project will take approximately 18 months to complete.

The new emergency department will be connected to the hospital and will help to address current space challenges by including multiple treatment spaces. This will be an increase of five (or 83%) over the current emergency department. The CPDMH had to temporarily close its current emergency department back in August due to nursing shortages.

Ottawa City News states that the new department will also aim to improve patient flow for both walk-in patients and those arriving by ambulance. There will also be barrier-free entrances for both patients and ambulances according to their release.

The CPDMH Foundation launched the public phase of its "Healthy Futures Together!" comprehensive capital fundraising campaign for the new emergency department and needed patient care equipment for the hospital last summer.

Carleton Place Hospital reports that the new ED will be built at the back of the existing hospital and connected at the first floor by a link that will include an elevator and stairs to navigate the change in elevation. It will include:

 - 11 treatment spaces

 - Private family room

 - More washrooms

 - Additional parking

 - Barrier-free walk-in entrances

 - Enhanced infection control standards

The Mississippi River Health Alliance reported that the Ministry of Health's investment of 18.8 million dollars will be a catalyst in bringing this long-imagined Emergency Department to life. John Jordan, member of Provincial Parliament, Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, stated that the emergency department will be able to accommodate a higher level of diagnostic and therapeutic needs and deliver reduced wait times and high-quality care to the growing number of residents served by the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital.

After a rigorous tendering process, Chandos Construction was awarded the contract to build the new Emergency Department.

Funding for the construction of the project is being provided by the Ministry of Health and the CPDMH Foundation through the ongoing Healthy Futures Together! campaign.
