Construction Begins on Health & Active Living Plaza in East Gwillimbury

The Town of East Gwillimbury officially awarded the contract for the construction of the Health and Active Living Plaza to Aquicon Construction Co. Ltd. during its recent council meeting. The development plaza will feature:

 - 85,000 square foot facility

 - Aquatics centre

 - New library branch

 - Maker space and sound studio

 - Gymnasium

 - Walk/run track and fitness space

 - Teaching kitchen

 - Interior boardwalk with public art

Ontario Construction News states that construction of the facility in Queensville, near Leslie Street and Jim Mortson Drive, will last about 26 months and is scheduled to begin in October 2022.

The 16 acre site was conveyed to the town in 2016, and development charges will be used to pay for construction of the facility, at no cost to the taxpayer.

The cost to build the facility is $76.5 million. Construction of a park and surrounding open spaces will be planned and started when the Health and Active Living Plaza is nearing completion.

The following organizations will be offering complementary services for the community at the new site:

 - Regional Municipality of York

 - York Regional Police

 - York Region District School Board

 - York Catholic District School Board

 - Numerous sports associations

New Market Today reports that once complete, the community can enjoy recreation, health, arts and culture, community services, and continuous learning, through one door, under one roof.

"East Gwillimbury is ready and excited for shovels in the ground and construction to begin on the Health and Active Living Plaza. After an extensive planning and public consultation process, we're thrilled to approach the construction phase of this project and we're doing so in a fiscally responsible way at no cost to the taxpayer and with no debt. In addition to a new library, recreational space and community service, this facility will bring the first aquatics centre to EG which is something our community has needed for a very long time."

Mayor of East Gwillimbury | Mayor Virginia Hackson

East Gwillimbury states that the park space will feature:
