Ottawa – Owners of the Château Laurier and architectsAlliance unveiled their fourth design for a proposed addition to the historic hotel last week. In a report presented Tuesday to the built-heritage sub-committee, Ottawa city staff recommended the city approve the planning application to alter the Chateau Laurier.
Larco Investments proposed lowering the height from eight to seven storeys, and clad it in stone, glass and bronze. The addition to the Fairmont Chateau Laurier would include 154 long stay hotel units, an interior courtyard and 349 underground parking spaces, a reduction of 36 from the first design.
Heritage Ottawa “remains unimpressed” and released a statement stating, in part, that “The revised design fails to resolve—or even address—the underlying flaw that impaired all of the previous attempts. The angular, blocky massing and style of the proposed addition remains intrinsically incompatible with the romantic sensibility of the historic Château.”
