Ontario is breaking ground on its first new provincial park in 40 years, marking a significant milestone in the province's history. Located in the picturesque cottage country, half an hour east of Bracebridge, the existing 5,000-acre Bigwind Lake Provincial Park will undergo a transformation to become a year-round recreational haven.
Bigwind Lake Provincial Park, currently non-operating and open only for low-intensity activities such as walking and hiking, will soon sport a plethora of facilities and amenities. The ministry plans to convert this tranquil space into an all-season destination which will include:
- Overnight campgrounds
- Backcountry camping
- All-season yurts or cabins
- Canoeing
- Hiking
- Skiing
David Piccini, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, has stated that construction will commence next fall, with the park expected to open its gates in 2026. This development is not just about building a park but about investing in Ontario Parks, the largest provider of outdoor recreational experiences in the province. The upgrade aligns with the growing demand for park systems, particularly considering its location within a few hours’ drive from the densely populated Greater Toronto/Hamilton area.
CBC News states that the park's design will cater to a variety of preferences and will offer:
- Walking and cycling trails
- Remote camping accommodations
- Electrified campsites
- Cabins with electric amenities
- Visitor centre
To ensure public satisfaction and engagement, the ministry will seek public input starting after the announcement in Bracebridge. Conversations with Indigenous communities have also been initiated, highlighting the inclusive approach to the park's transformation.
The park's development plan aims to create 250 campsites with electricity access and up to 25 yurts/cabins. This overhaul is expected to significantly benefit the local economy, with estimates suggesting that it could bring in about $16 million annually to the Bracebridge area.
