A new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment is being built in Clinton per Ontario Construction Report. The Government of Ontario is investing $20 million to build this facility.
Construction has just started on the Huron County detachment which will be one of nine included in the OPP Modernization Phase 2 project designed to upgrade some aging facilities. This will be part of a $182 million investment to replace these aging buildings. The Clinton detachment will be completed in late 2020.
Bird Capital Limited Partnership will be responsible for the construction which is located at 325 Albert Street in southwestern Ontario and will provide space and infrastructure to support the changing technology that is needed. The following features will also be included:
- Spacious and secure evidence vaults
- Six holding cells
- CCTV
- Other advanced security features
The OPP Modernization Phase 2 project will be delivered through Infrastructure Ontario's public-private partnership model which transfers risks that are associated with design, construction and financing of the project to the private sector.
The structure will be fully accessible and designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standard.
According to Blackburn News, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson said "With today's rapidly changing world, it's important for local police forces to have up to date equipment and facilities. Clinton is basically in the centre of Huron County, so it makes sense for the OPP to have a detachment there."
Per the Clinton News Record, Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn said, "It's the jobs that will be coming here and all the spin-offs from these jobs, so the restaurants, gas stations, the Tim Horton's, and the stores will benefit from those people coming to Clinton."
