The Ontario government is supporting an investment of more than $14.8 million by Greenlid to build a new manufacturing facility that will bring the company's production to Ontario. To advance this project, the government is providing Greenlid with $500,000 in funding through the Regional Development Program's Southwestern Ontario Development Fund.
Greenlid is an Ontario company that produces compostable products such as plates, bowls, coffee cups and lids. Their manufacturing is currently being done in China, but with this investment, Greenlid will be able to bring their production and supply chain back to Ontario.
The project will include:
- 60,000 square foot facility
- All the equipment necessary for the manufacturing of the company's products
- Capacity for ongoing research and innovation
Collingwood Today states that the new facility will be constructed in the Southgate Eco Park in Dundalk. Premier Doug Ford made the announcement in a news release regarding the funding along with Greenlid CEO Morgan Wyatt.
Premier Ford called Greenlid's return to manufacturing in Ontario a success story. According to Wyatt, the company got its start on Dragon's Den and now supplies 14,000 retail stores across North America with compostable product lines.
"With the additional support of the Ontario government for this project and local community, Greenlid's state-of-the-art Non-wood Fibre Manufacturing and Innovation Centre will now specialize in developing Ontario's agricultural fibre waste into high-value compostable products with less impact on the environment."

Construction is already underway on the new facility and Wyatt stated that they would be purchasing local fibre sources for use in the manufacturing plant. The facility is expected to eventually employ about 22 people.
Ontario News reports that as part of the government's work to build the economy, Ontario is investing more than $100 million through the Regional Development Program from 2019 to 2023 to help meet regional needs. The program provides cost-shared funding to businesses, municipalities and economic development organizations to help attract investment, diversify their economies and create jobs.
The Sun Times stated that the project is a partnership with Ice River Sustainable Solutions, a local company that got its start in bottled water, but has expanded into other ventures including recycling, organics and sustainable products. Ice River purchased Greenlid last year.
"Greenlid is a true Ontario success story that showcases the best of who we are as a province. We know that businesses like Greenlid need the right conditions to grow and invest and that is why we launched our regional development program in 2019 to transform business supports. Through this program we invested $66 million into 60 different companies and organizations, and with this support these companies have been able to invest 716 million of their dollars to create more than 1,200 jobs all across the province."
Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation & Trade | Vic Fedili
Greenlid was founded in 2014 and developed a patented compostable material as a replacement for plastic or biodegradable materials.
