9 public transit projects proposed for the Durham Region

Joint federal, provincial and municipal funding through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan will support these 11 public transit projects in the Durham Region. 

News Ontario states that the Government of Canada is investing more than $45.3 million in these projects. The Government of Ontario is providing over $37.7 million, while the Regional Municipality of Durham is contributing more than $43.2 million in total toward these projects:

 

1. Detailed Design and Construction of Bus Rapid Transit Lanes in the Towns of Ajax and Whitby and the City of Oshawa consists of the design and construction of Bus Rapid Transit lanes with active transportation corridors on Kingston Road in the Town of Ajax, Dundas Street in Whitby, and downtown Oshawa. New cycling lanes and multi-use paths will connect to the transit stations along the corridors, providing residents with more options for accessing the transit system. (Federal Funding: $23,478,000/ Provincial Funding: $19,563,044/ Municipal Funding: $28,653,957)

 

2. The implementation of a 10 kilometre north-south bus rapid transit (BRT) service through Oshawa that will run along Simcoe Street from Royal Street north to Highway 407. The project will include eight new conventional buses, new bus shelters and traffic signal upgrades that will improve service reliability along the transit corridor. An assessment will also be conducted to evaluate future rapid transit solutions for the Simcoe Street corridor. (Federal Funding: $5,054,000/ Provincial Funding: $4,211,246/ Municipal Funding: $3,369,755)

 

3. Replacement of 11 conventional buses with the region's first hybrid electric buses. The new vehicles will reduce emissions and fuel costs while providing transit users with a modern, safe, and efficient transit system. (Federal Funding: $3,960,000/ Provincial Funding: $3,299,670/ Municipal Funding: $2,640,330)

4. The resurfacing of unpaved bus stops will ensure that they are fully accessible, while the installation of accessible bus shelters with solar lighting will improve the safety and comfort of transit users. (Federal Funding: $3,897,600/ Provincial Funding: $3,247,675/ Municipal Funding: $2,598,725)

 

5. Purchase of 13 buses, 40 feet long, to replace the older vehicles in the PULSE rapid transit fleet. Equipped with fare payment collection technology, the new vehicles will provide transit users with a modern, safe and efficient fleet. (Federal Funding: $3,762,000/ Provincial Funding: $3,134,687/ Municipal Funding: $2,508,314)

 

6. The construction of a new 7,500 square foot transit operations building that meets accessibility and energy efficiency standards will result in a higher quality public transit system. (Federal Funding: $2,000,000/ Provincial Funding: $1,666,500/ Municipal Funding: $1,333,500)

 

7. Replacement of 16 mini buses used for On Demand and specialized transit services. The new vehicles will ensure the continued operation of a modern, safe and efficient transit fleet. (Federal Funding: $ 1,268,800/ Provincial Funding: $1,057,228/ Municipal Funding: $845,972)

 

8. Purchase of two articulated buses for the region's PULSE rapid transit fleet to provide increased capacity along the high-volume bus rapid transit corridor. (Federal Funding: $900,000/ Provincial Funding: $749,925/ Municipal Funding: $600,075)

 

9. The installation of protective shields on Durham's public transit bus fleet with provide a physical barrier between customers and transit vehicle operators, resulting in improved safety for operators and transit users. (Federal Funding: $490,000/ Provincial Funding: $408,293/ Municipal Funding: $326,708)

 

10. The replacement of on-board destination signs on the Durham Region Transit bus fleet: bigger and brighter signs with Wi-Fi enabled digital controls to improve accessibility and visibility of destinations for customers. (Federal Funding: $300,000/ Provincial Funding: $249,975/ Municipal Funding: $200,025)

 

11. The installation of a fuel and fluid data collection system that will improve the performance of the bus fleet. Sensors that track fuel and fluid consumption levels will be installed on the fleet vehicles and tracked by the new central monitoring system. (Federal Funding: $200,000/ Provincial Funding: $166,650/ Municipal Funding: $133,350)
